how can i get my dog to not be terrified of the hula-hoop?
i hav a little rat terrier and he’s a REAL jumper! he can jump atleast 4 1/2 ft. in the air…but he’s scarred of the hula-hoop. he’s simple to train and i know he can jump through it and do tricks but he’s just so scarred. what do i do?
Repetition, big rewards, and incremental changes.
Is he afraid of it on the floor? If so, put it down 10 feet from his food bowl, move it closer each day until that does not bother him. Next you want him to walk through it on the ground, then a couple inch jump, etc… BIG rewards every time he goes through the hoop, even if it’s just resting on the ground. Repeat the walk-through and the low jump until he’s very comfortable and quick about it before you attempt the higher jumps.
I have a rescue greyhound. Before I got him, he had only ever been in a kennel or racetrack. _Everything_ scared him. I taught him heel first. From there we learned to heel closer and closer to the frightening thing, until now we can walk right up to them.
