Do two four foot fences, four feet apart really keep the deer out?
I have tried everything to keep deer out of my gardens. Our town limits fencing to four feet high, but my research indicates that deer can only jump high, not wide. Has anyone had any experience with this before we purchase two rows of parallel fences?
Yes, absolutely. If you have the room for two four-foot fences four feet apart go for it. Deer have to see where they’re jumping to, and fences spaced in that way confuse them.
I have a large deer population to cope with too, and we’ve tried various things – the proprietary sprays, tying chunks of perfumed soap to trees/shrubs, male urine, etc. They all work for a while, but the deer get used to them after about a month. This past winter was so severe that the deer ate anything that didn’t move, including some large yucca plants!
Another thing that will keep deer away, of course, is the presence of a large dog. But I don’t really want a dog, and if I had one I wouldn’t keep it outside.
Try the 4-foot fences, and well done to you for doing your own research, unlike some people.
